Delivering an Improved community
- to help community projects, individuals and communities spread their messages innovatively
- to create hub for people sharing skills and exchanging information to create exciting content which can be published and distributed online
- to provide access to the equipment needed to create social media, to support the development of community reporters, to act as a communication hub for a local community providing multiplatform content distribution
In essence, a (social) Community Media Centre (Hub) is a place that not only supports the development of content but also provides a social space for people to interact and learn from each other. It acts as a communication hub for the local community by providing a single point of access for the development and distribution of content. A Community Media Centre therefore might not only provide a social space for the development of content but also provide informal and formal accredited programmes. This may include local community reporters who are collecting and developing local content. This content could be distributed via a community web site, local blogs, internet TV station (using a U tube channel), internet radio (podcasts), multimedia online magazine (opens source), or a physical newspaper. The purpose of the centre is also to develop dialogue and consultation between different agencies, individuals and communities - stimulating personal development, and collective involvement
The benefits of such an initiative to our community and those of younger ages would be immense and assist greatly developing an all embracing community development
It is emphasised in the previous Government’s 2010 report, that there is need for fundamental change in the make-up of an overall library service– No one will disagree with this statement
At this moment in time we do not have an estimate as to the extent of library access -however we do envisage that all these services should be additional to and outside the new hours of opening hours ..
Initially we suggest Tuesdays 2:00pm < 7.00pm ( this will enable attendance by those retired, at full time work and full time students ) this will also provide an opportunity for expanding and using earlier times and ultimately expanding into a full day together with content which eventually could include a wide variety of subjects, - possibly including all of the following
Creating a local Online community ( utilising the established Community website www.burtonjoyceonline.co.uk)
Instruction/training can include ;
Basic emailing and the Internet for the OVER 50’s
Help in understanding and accessing the potential of the Internet.
Attracting the teenager Computer literates and innovators
Investigating the availability of additional computer /Internet facilities (via Wi Fi)
Genealogy and local history
Attracting Computer literates and innovators
Creation of a media studies group with teenagers/matures activities/ interest
Workshops with established individuals in the media
News gathering – presenting – reporting – recording/ writing – publicity – promotion - archiving, etc supplemented with workshops and guest speakers in the relevant fields -
Digital Photography
Games /simulators (car driving – Airplane piloting )
Painting/ Graphics/cartoons
Coffee and chat days – including NHW Drop- ins etc etc
We estimate that approx only 50% of our community have home access to Broadband.
50 % our the population are “Over 50”.
It is also widely accepted that there is a absence of “teenager interests” within our village - ACommunity Media Hubinitiative could provide a great potential/interest in overcoming some of this deficiency
How can this initiative be funded ? .. .. ..
Premises can be provided without cost via Notts CC Library Service
Equipment by donations from BJPC, GBC, Notts CC and local Councillors etc
Ongoing consumables via donations for local businesses, sponsorship etc
Specialist equipment and instruction may be available for loan and guidance and provided by companies and institutions, commercial and education establishments
We are suggesting a “not for profit” BJO Community Media Hubinitiative be developed specialising in using social media as a community engagement tool
Our aims would be to:
- Connect Communities through the use of social media
- Support civil society and improved governance
- Encourage outward looking communities
- Create real conversations between communities and public agencies
- Ensure that people from all kinds of communities have a voice
- Create a "Reuters of the Community"
- Undertake authentic engagements, Exhibitions, events
- Promote and publicise our own village , services and community
- Raise aspiration of individuals
An Initiative which we believe with deliver an improved community
“Everyone has something to say - about where they live, what they're experiencing, and what they want to see happen. A “Community Media Hub”initiative gives people a platform to tell these stories online and by conventional means.
We want to work with individuals from all constituents of communities to give them a voice and build their confidence in the use of social media tools.
We want all those interested in learning and becoming involved in producing content with new social media tools such as blogs, podcasts, films and wikis, and use everything from computers, mobile phones to video cameras and webcams. Stories can be distributed through our on-line networks and through other social network sites such as Twitter and Facebook etc.. enabling those voices to be heard/seen by anyone Online everywhere.
Here is a further initiative which could be considered for community participation within libraries
“See it large and clear” – With the installation of a large flat TV screen for learning, rolling news and selected programmes - 2012 Olympics ! Operas etc plus selective national/cultural community TV . This could prove to be a real attraction for handicapped residents and singles in the community
