BUS PLUGS LATEST !
It looks like we are finally getting somewhere with the Bus Plugs as the new administration at County Hall seems to be honouring its manifesto pledge to open them up. Residents of Burton Joyce and Gedling have consistently turned out in large numbers to meetings and demonstrations to express their opposition to the road closure.
At long last, we have the promise of their removal.
A public consultation meeting is planned in the very near future by the County Council. The purpose of the meeting is not, of course, to discuss whether or not the road will be opened but to present and seek opinion on the several options open to the Council in terms of layout, speed restrictions etc.
It is regrettable that certain Councillors and aspects of the media have sought, in their reporting, to divide our single community of Gedling and Burton Joyce (most of us have friends and relatives throughout the area) in order to promote controversy for their own ends. Our demographically analysed survey and petition indisputably demonstrate the true situation: that the number of people in favour of continued road closure constitutes a very small minority compared to those, on both sides of the divide, wanting it opened up. These former should not worry, however. The road will in no way return to the congestion of before; the Council’s aim is to bar HGV’s and restrict the amount of traffic to about 4000 vehicles per day – a very small number for an A road.

Another "Bus Plug" Protestor's words .. ..
“The Nottingham Evening Post dated 25th July, pictured 22 people demonstrating at the “bus plug” in favour of its retention. Lest we forget, .. prior to this hundreds demonstrated at the same spot demanding its removal and that in excess of 500 individuals meeting in the Burton Joyce Village Hall were unanimous in their opposition to the scheme.
Certain individuals state that changing the scheme now, would only “appease a few people” - this is monumentally dishonest - a petition presented to County Hall reveals precisely what the majority wants .
There were 1211 signatories from Burton Joyce and 2153 from the Gedling/Carlton area, the remainder being from farther afield . In addition this information was provided and confirmed with signatures via a door to door survey.
Those who oppose the reopening of this stretch of Burton Road are in a small minority and it is important that the negative environmental impact of its closure is put right as soon as possible , as well as respecting the legitimate wishes of thousands of citizens in Gedling and beyond”
Lets all come together once again and give voice to our opinion when the next opportunity presents itself, hopefully in September !
