Hi everyone
Â
Although the 2011 BJ library/BJ NHW negotiations did not even get off the ground, our subsequent lobbying and association with NottsWatch - the County's NHW umbrella organisation has proved successful and decisive in persuading the Notts CC Library Admin and Notts Police that our "ABC Basic Computer Tutorial" initiative really does have merit in the creation and development of a well informed/communicating society.
Â
As a result we shall be introducing the "ABC initiative" once again for the BJ Community in the BJ Library from mid March - running it for approx 8 weeks - breaking for the summer period - and continuing once again for a further 8 week period from Mid September.
Â
Incidentally the NHW ABC initiative is to be promoted simultaneously within other communities (via the NHW & Notts CC libraries & Police ) thro-out the county during the same periods
Â
So if you have a friend or relative let them know that with our help all it will take is just ONE Hour to get Online at the Library - We have already help some 30+ in ourf community , several already in their 80's - Use our message
Â
“If you use a Mobile phone or TV remote YOU CAN LEARN to use a computer, e mailing/internet in just ONE hour"
with the “NHW ABC Basic Computer Learning Initiative”
( its FREE to ALL in our community)
“Owning a computer is NOT necessary
Â
Tutoring in BJ Library
 Tel BJ NHW - 0115 84 77 656 ( between 11:00am - 4:00 pm )
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Â
We also intend re-introducing an improved "NHW Drop-In" (on training days in the BJ library), developing it further to include individual help with emailing, re-inforced learning, "buddy" chat, socialising and much more. These "Drop-ins" will be open to everyone in the community - not simply the NHW members
Â
Â
Our aim is to develop further the expansion and develop of Online socialising contact and chat within BJ community and hopefully attract those in the communities of Bulcote, Stoke Bardolph, Gedling Village, Lambley, Oxton, lowdham, Gunthorpe, Caythorpe, Hoveringham and Gonalston to join us
Â
For it is accepted that
Â
3.1 million over 65-year-olds in the UK DON'T see a family, friend or neighbour even once a week
Â
51% of over 75 year olds live alone and just over 11% aged 65 and over say they are alwys or often lonely
Â
Internet access enbles closer and more regular contact with friend and family, decreasing feelings of loneliness and isolation
Â
Mobility barriers are eased by Online shopping and communication
Â
Shopping and paying bills Online saves the average household £560 per year
Â
Children in homes with internet access achieve 2 grades higher
Â
Digitally excluded employed people would increase their earnings by an average in excess of £8300 in their lifetime by getting Online
Â
96% of Internet users say the Internet has improved their life
Â
39% of people aged 65 and over are estimated to have a disability
Â
Which is why it is important, for ALL ages within our community, to become digitally aware and computer savvy by "Getting Online"
Â
Â
We presume that everyone receiving and reading his email with have some degree of experience with computers, so we are also asking you to also consider joining us, by giving just the odd hour or two - on the occasional day - during the 8 week period in Spring and Autumn - to contribute by providing a little of your time for socialising and helping the "Over 50's" within BJ ( in our Library) to overcome their hesitance in getting Online and enjoying the contact it can bring with families and friends locally, nationally and overseas
Â
Just a final point -Â the additional use of BJ library with this NHW initiative will also contribute immensely towards safeguarding the library's future ( and is enthusiastically endorsed by the Notts CC Library Admin ) PLUS - it is also worth noting that the BJPC has also stated it will add WiFi facilities when it re-locates there - for the FREE use of our residents - This "cost free" will open-up a great potential for those in our community to have "face to face" conversations with friend and relatives anywhere in the world providing they too are on the Internet
Â
Finally, we do genuinely need, look to you, for your support and goodwill - for even though AGE catches up with us all , it DOES NOT mean that ANYONE within our community, should not have access to and enjoy the benefits of the digital revolution - Your help will be greatly appreciated

NEIGHBOURHOOD UPDATE (Updated 02/1252011)
Nottinghamshire Trading Standards has received information in relation to a doorstep trader who has been operating in the area. In one instance a consumer was initially quoted £95 to have moss on their roof removed. However, the trader claimed to find other problems while in the roof, which resulted in the final cost being £2500. The consumer paid the trader, but he has not returned to complete the work.
Â
Trading Standards never recommend employing a trader based on a cold call.
Â
If you have signed up for work to be done, but would now like to cancel please be aware that businesses have to give consumers a written cancellation notice giving seven days to cancel any contract which is agreed during a visit to a consumer’s home. If you have not received a cancellation notice the trader cannot enforce the contract.

BURTON JOYCE
On 18th October 2011 members of your Local Safer Neighbourhoods Team and local Councillors and Community Representatives met at Carlton Police Station to discuss local matters and set Police Priorities for the next 3 months.
For the Burton Joyce area it was agreed that the priority for the next 3 months would be Speeding Vehicles. Complaints have been received regarding the speed of vehicles on the A612 namely the stretch from Burton Road onto Nottingham Road and through the main Church Road. To discourage this behaviour the team will be out with the speed gun and persons exceeding the speed limit will be prosecuted.
There have been eleven reports of crime in Burton Joyce over the last month. This is an increase on the previous month and has coincided with the clocks being turned back.
Â
We have had 2 house burglaries where the offenders stole car keys and took the cars from the driveways however the good news is both cars were found very soon afterwards and the offenders were arrested and are now bail for those offences.
There has been a couple of attempted break ins to the same property on Station Road that is unoccupied.
There has been a garage broken into on Saint Helens Crescent the items taken were a lawnmower and a pedal cycle.
We have had 2 cars damaged one was a cut to a tyre and the other has damage caused to a roof, it is believed that someone had walked over the top of it.
Main Street appears to be the target area at the moment with a theft from a motor vehicle and also the theft of a Green Mini.
It would appear that opportunist thieves are about as we have had a metal bench stolen from Nottingham Road and a life size statue of a Fox stolen from Foxhill Road.
There have been a couple of calls relating to Anti Social Behaviour and these have centred around the village centre.
We the Police regularly receive complaints about noise this is a council issue and they should be contacted as well. The number for the council is 9013901. It is common courtesy to tell your neighbours that you are having a gathering or party.
Your Neighbourhood Policing Team will be out and about in the village keeping tabs on the Anti Social Behaviour.
Parking around the school becoming a very big issue now, this is both in the morning and the afternoon. Can we ask that you do not park on the yellow zigzag lines, over driveways and within 15ft of a junction. If you ignore the above then you are putting your children and others at risk.

Alert -Â 11/10/2011 - Nottinghamshire Police access to service
Posted on 11th October 2011 11:39
Nottinghamshire Police has now finalised its preferred plans for the future of police stations across the county, including those which will provide front counter services to the public.
The force has undertaken a rigorous review of all stations and bases across the county as part of an organisational restructure to make the best use of its resources and to become the best performing force in the country by 2015.
These include retaining front counter services - all with consistent opening times - at 19 key stations, rather than the current 42. A total of 12 stations which are hardly used by the public will close - six of these will see officers moving into alternative community premises nearby, while the remainder will see officers relocated back to the nearest available station.
The moves will ensure everyone in Nottinghamshire will be within a 20-minute journey (or eight mile radius) of a front counter and a Neighbourhood Policing Team.
It will also raise around £880,000 from the sale of buildings and save almost £720,000 a year in rent and running costs - the equivalent of around 50 police staff jobs. .. .. ..

Beat Update (Updated 3rd of October 2011)
BURTON JOYCE
There have been five reports of crime in Burton Joyce over the last month. This is two more than last month and we have had no reported burglaries. The above crimes are as follows. Three thefts from motor vehicles, one burglary other and a theft from front garden. Two individuals are believed to be involved in the burglary others, these being you’re out building and sheds
We have had three calls about anti social behaviour within the village. This is three less than last month and where about groups in and around the village and on Trent Lane.
With regards to the noise issues we had, these have calmed down. But, this is a council issue and they should be contacted as well. The number for the council is 9013901. It is common courtesy to tell your neighbours that you are having a gathering or party.
Your Neighbourhood Policing Team has been about in the village and we are keeping a watchful eye on the anti social behaviour. Patrols have also been carried out around the allotments this last month and we have had no more sheds broken into at this location.
Parking around the school becoming a very big issue now, this is both in the morning and the afternoon. Can I ask that you do not park on the yellow zigzag lines, over driveways and within 15ft of a junction. If you ignore the above then you are putting your children and others at risk.
PRIORITY UPDATES
Speeding - Members of the Neighbourhood Policing team are continuing to carry out speed checks at a number of locations identified by the community and so far the results have been good, with only a few motorists breaking the speed limits. These speed checks will continue for the foreseeable future.
Â
Anti Social Behaviour – This is for the area of Burton Joyce and in particular Main Street. There has been an increasing problem of groups gathering on Main Street and outside the Co-op and at the rear of the shops and going onto a flat roof at the same location.
Â
Parking – This has been identified as a problem in the Gedling, Burton Joyce and Lambley Village area. At the recent Local Area Group Meeting it was decided to make parking a priority on the Gedling area.
Examples may include blocking the pavement so as to cause a pedestrian to walk on the road, blocking a driveway or parking so as to obstruct the road for other motorists. Please do not park on double yellow lines. Notts County Council Parking Wardens have also promised to patrol the areas affected so if you park illegally you may well end up with a ticket on your car or worse still your car towed away with an expensive recovery bill to follow.

Â
Good Morning residents of Burton Joyce and Stoke Bardolph,
Can I take a minute of your time just to make you aware of the problem we have with shed and garage breaks in the village.
Within the last five days we have had one garage and two sheds/outbuildings broken into. Items that have been stolen are pedal cycles and there has been four in total taken. Three from one garage and one from an outbuilding.
These breaks have occurred during the hours of darkness and we believe the people responsible for these breaks are as follows. Two white males in there early 20's and they travel to the village in a vehicle.
Please ensure that all outbuildings and garages are secure. Make sure all valuable items are out of sight or chained together. Let’s make it difficult for these people to take your belongings and reduce crime in the village,
Â
Many Thanks, PCSO 8907 James Lievesley

KEEPING YOUÂ - OUR COMMUNITY INFORMED ( incorporating BJ "Community" Neighbourhood Watch )
Â
Hi Everyone - Here is a solution to a long time problem within BJ, which we hope you will consider and participate in
Â
We have for many years been aware of the fact that the distribution and communication of information thro-out the community has been in-effec tive and wanting. Creating a reliable remedy for this has not had a simply, economical remedy. However we believe we do now have an answer which can go a long way toward providing a solution.
We now have a community “burtonjoyceonline - Keeping you informed” contact /email list ( which originated as our NHW co-ordinator list ) which is now well into the mid 100’s. As many of you will be aware we circulate by email “ burtonjoycenews Alerts “ quite frequently . Yet as many in the village are not ONLINE, we suggest, that if each recipient of our e mail “Alerts” speaks or passes on the information ( when convenient ) to just two friends/neighbours and they in turn chat to two others, then within a short time/days the information will be widespread out in the community – Thus creating a simple/viable/ low cost, yet effective flexible “burtonjoycenews Grapevine” . How about starting with the Alert11 - BUS PLUG information.
We ask and hope many ( preferably all ) will participate and create in establishing an effective “BJ Grapevine” for it has all the Advantages and NO Disadvantages and with the myriad of information within our website (www.butonjoyceonline.co.uk)Â will also assist in aiding the community effectively communicating on a "one to one" contact basis – A WIN/WIN situation

Dear members & supporters, 28/06/2011
There have been some recent reports of car number plate cloning fraud. This is where criminals will fit a car with a 'clone' of your number plate so that if their car is involved in an accident or an offence such as speeding, your car ends up 'taking the blame' for the incident. This could result in heavy financial losses or even criminal charges. You can read more here at the This Is Money website: http://bit.ly/kYFSgC
Drivers who have number plates stolen or cloned should report the crime immediately to the police. Those who receive unexplained speeding or parking tickets should contact the issuing authority promptly.
Drivers who fall victim more than once should ask the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency if they can re-register their car with a new number.
Yours faithfully,
Catherine Dunn
Information & Database Officer, NHWN

ACPO are working with forces on their roll-out plans.

Â
Further to my message reference 2021 sent out on Friday morning last, thank you to the many people who have responded. Where your replies have included information or descriptions they have been forwarded to Neighbourhood Policing Team members for the area. This is an active problem driven by the unusually high scrap value of all sorts of metals.
To put that in context, during the week to 1 April 2011 across the Nottinghamshire Police area there were 34 distinct reports of offences where persons had walked onto drives or gardens and stolen items including a trampoline, a boiler and a dishwasher. These do not include thefts of lead flashing or copper piping where these were removed using force from external walls or roofs. They also do not include the theft of bicycles and motorcycles which may have been stolen as conveyances rather than for their scrap value.
There are, of course, many legitimate scrap collectors who will enquire politely if they might take scrap items and who will take "no" for an answer. They will be registered under the Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989 which makes it an offence for any person, who is not a registered waste carrier, to transport any controlled waste to, or from, any place in Great Britain: in the course of any business or with a view to profit
Registration in these circumstances is with the Environment Agency.
*** A householder who passes on controlled waste to someone without checking that the recipient has the requisite paperwork may themselves be committing an offence.
Please do not stop sending us your sightings. Your information is invaluable

Further to the alert below sent on 21/02/2011. Please note that this scam can take many forms. The caller in some cases may not state that they are calling on behalf of Microsoft – the caller may state that they are calling from various other companies such as ‘Virgin Media’, ‘AVG’ or from other online security companies.
We would urge individuals to remain vigilant when receiving phone calls from any individual purporting to be from any of the companies named above or others. It is highly UNLIKELY that Internet providers/Internet Security providers will contact you via telephone to rectify a security issue with a householder/business computer. The security of the computer sits with the owner. To prevent further victims of this scam, please pass this message on.
For more information on security advice for you computer and when using the Internet you may wish to visit www.getsafeonline.org which provides some helpful advice.
“Please be aware that we have received a number of reports from members of the alert system regarding what appear to be computer scams.
The scam has been reported in various newspapers throughout 2010 warning individuals of the scam; however, it would appear that the scam is still active.
The scam is usually conducted in the following way. The victim receives a phone call from an individual purporting to be from Microsoft quoting the victims’ name and address. The individual informs the victim that they have received a report from the victim’s Internet service provider of serious virus problems from their computer. The victim is told that if the problem is not addressed the computer will then become unusable.
The victim is then asked to open a programme called ‘Windows Event Viewer’. The contents of this programme can appear worrying displaying what looks like a list of errors, and the caller advises that this is the correct programme, and that they will guide the victim through the process to fix them.
The caller then directs the victim to a website and asks the victim to download a programme that provides remote control of the computer. The caller will then install various ‘fixes’ for the computer, and once completed request a £185 subscription for preventing further problems.
However, the victim is unaware that there is nothing wrong with their computer and that the caller does not work for Microsoft. In fact the caller now has access to all the data on the computer.
We would therefore like to make you aware of this scam, and advise you to terminate any phone calls or delete any email messages that appear to be of the same nature. Please remain vigilant when being asked for personal details or access to your computer from an unknown source. Microsoft is aware of the problem and do not make unsolicited phone calls or send unsolicited email messages to help individuals fix their computer. This is stated on the Microsoft website.
Anyone that has received similar phone calls or emails and is suspicious that they are scams can inform Nottinghamshire Police by using the ‘report information’ facility on the Notts Business Watch website or by calling the Non-emergency number on 0300 300 99 99 “

Subject: Practical Security (based in Enderby, Leics)
Hi Rhodri
Following the message I sent out yesterday about Leicestershire Police Security one of the recipients had a call this morning from someone called Dean Taylor who said he works for Crime Prevention Awareness and is contactable on 0116 286 9869. I have checked the phone number and it comes back to the above company which sells monitored alarms and cold calls people. I checked their website http://www.practicalsecurity.co.uk/index.html They do not mention either of the industry quality control bodies but it is not mandatory for them to be registered with either the NSI or the SSAIB. We would not recommend that anyone has an alarm installation done by a company which has not registered with one or the other.
Unless you know something against this company (or want the opportunity to sit in on their sales pitch) I will get back to my informant in Burton Joyce and tell him they seem to be legitimate but not registered. I said I would speak to him before 1200 today.

NEW STREAMLINED APPROACH TO TACKLE ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOURÂ
Â
Councils, police and other local agencies will be forced to support victims of persistent antisocial behaviour as part of plans to give them better tools and powers outlined by Crime Prevention Minister James Brokenshire today.
This follows a review that found there are too many tools for practitioners to tackle ASB some of which are too bureaucratic, too costly and do not address underlying problems. At the same time, the growing number of people who ignore their penalties suggests a persistent minority are still not being deterred from committing ASB.
Â
A public consultation, launched today, proposes a number of new measures to better protect communities from the serious harm caused by criminal and antisocial behaviour.
Â
These include:
Â
·      Community Triggers - where local agencies will be compelled to take action if several people in the same neighbourhood have complained and no action had been taken; or the behaviour in question has been reported to the authorities by an individual three times, and no action had been taken;
·      Criminal Behaviour Orders – issued by the courts after conviction, the order would ban an individual from certain activities or places and require them to address their behaviour, for example attending drug treatment programmes. A breach would see an individual face a maximum five year prison term;
·      Crime Prevention Injunctions - designed to nip bad behaviour in the bud before it escalates. The injunction would carry a civil burden of proof, making it quicker and easier to obtain than previous tools. For adults, breach of the injunction could see you imprisoned or fined. For under-18s a breach could be dealt with through curfews, supervision or detention.
·      Community Protection Orders - comprising one order for local authorities to stop persistent environmental ASB like graffiti, neighbour noise or dog fouling; and another for police and local authorities to deal with more serious disorder and criminality in a specific place such as closing a property used for drug dealing; and
·      Police ‘Direction’ powers – a power to direct any individual causing or likely to cause crime or disorder away from a particular place and to confiscate related items.
Â
Subject to consultation the new tools will replace 18 of the formal powers currently available. They will be more flexible, quicker to obtain and less bureaucratic for police, courts and other local agencies, making it easier to deal with persistent offenders.
Â
James Brokenshire said:
Â
“For too long antisocial behaviour has wreaked havoc in our communities and ruined decent people’s lives.
Â
“It is time for a new approach that better supports victims and makes it easier for the authorities to take fast, effective action.
Â
“This consultation sets out a how we propose to tackle this stubborn problem, ensuring the most vulnerable in our communities are protected from the cowards and bullies who carry on in such an offensive manner.
Â
“It is important there is no let-up – local areas must continue to use the most appropriate powers available to them.”
Â
Louise Casey, Commissioner for Victims and Witnesses, said:
Â
“In my role as Victims’ Commissioner I have seen first hand the powerlessness and despair that victims often feel when they are targeted again and again by anti-social and criminal behaviour. So I am heartened by the announcement of the new proposals today that put tough enforcement action against perpetrators at the centre.
Â
“I am pleased that the message being sent out from government today is that there is no excuse for police and councils to stand by and allow their communities to suffer from lawless, mindless thuggery that makes people’s lives unbearable.”
Â
Â
NOTES TO EDITORS
Â
1.     The consultation document can be found at: http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/asb-consultation
Â
2.     Reform of the ASB tools and powers is one part of a new approach to ASB that also includes:
Â
·       Street level crime and local policing information that allows the public to see what crimes are being committed in their neighbourhood;
·       Trials in eight police force areas setting out a new approach for handling complaints of ASB. It includes a new system of logging complaints and improving the use of IT to share information that will help to quickly identify and protect vulnerable victims;
·       Plans, announced by the Housing Minister earlier this year to speed up the process for social landlords to evict tenants who commit persistent ASB; and
·       The work of Baroness Newlove, the Government’s Champion for Active Safer Communities to look at how government and local agencies can empower communities and drive up local activism.
Â
3.     The Community Trigger will mean the local authorities in question would have a duty to inform the complainants within 14 days of what they planned to do. Police and Crime Commissioner (PCCs to be introduced in 2012) would then be able to ‘call in’ the authority for an explanation if they felt the response was inadequate.

Nottinghamshire Police have had several calls recently about a firm called St Johns Security which is contacting residents by telephone (number withheld) offering to install a monitored burglar alarm free of charge. We warned residents about this approach around six months ago. This company has, however, become active in the area again.
We should emphasise that this company is in no way connected to the St John Ambulance charity. Nor is it working in partnership with the Police nor does it pay any money to the Police.
There are several similar companies which specialise in supplying unnecessary monitored alarm systems and charging exorbitantly for this service. For domestic settings we would not normally advise a monitored alarm unless it has been specifically required by your insurer or there are special circumstances such as highly valuable fine art on the premises.
Such companies make their money by tying people in to lengthy contracts at high cost and will often expect to be paid half up front. A typical cost would be £3,000. Compare this with the guide price for a basic professionally installed system for a typical house of around £500.
We would recommend that you do not purchase any security measure from uninvited callers - either by telephone or door to door.

I have been informed by numerous members of the public in the Burton Joyce area that roof tacks are being placed on roadways off Willow Wong.Â
Attempting to cause criminal damage is an offence and is an ARRESTABLE OFFENCE. Not only is it an offence to attempt/cause criminal damage to tyers and motor vehicles but such actions could have a detrimental effect on a cars safety and therefore putting the occupants of that vehicle at risk of physical harm/injury.Â
If you have issues with roadways in your area please contact the Gedling South beat cluster. Details of which can be found on the Nottinghamshire Police WebsiteÂ

Trading Standards have experienced an increase in the number of complaints received about two identity theft scams.
The scams are designed to trick people into divulging personal details –
The first scam has been reported by several Nottinghamshire residents who have received a telephone call from someone saying they are calling on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council. They have then gone on to ask a range of personal questions such as who their power provider is, and what benefits they receive before asking for bank account information.
The other scam is aimed at internet users: the phone rings and the caller asks for the householder, quoting their name and address before claiming to be calling from Microsoft or the householder’s internet provider. The customer is then directed to a website and told to download a program that allows the caller remote control and access to the customer’s computer. They may ask for a fee via credit or debit card. Various "fixes" for the “problem” are then carried out to justify the access being allowed.
Never give your bank details or credit card details to any unsolicited seller over the telephone, no matter how authentic they sound. These calls often come from outside the UK, making it very difficult to get redress.
If you're concerned about these scams or fear you may have been targeted,
 please contact Consumer Direct:

Within the last 15 days an initiative by some in our village to established the Burton Joyce Community Neighbourhood Watch culminated with a huge vote of approval by those who attended the event and the 39 individuals who have volunteered to become Street Co-ordinators. However with the natural comings and goings of individuals/families within our community additional volunteers are always welcome
It should be clearly understood that this lastest community initiative is NOT associated with any established local administration - the Parish Council, L A Council or County Council. However it does HAVE the complete SUPPORT of the Nottinghamshire Police (as was clearly illustrated by their attendance at the OPEN DAY)
Incidentally every Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the UK is OWNED BY and RUN by its VOLUNTEERS - also the national NHW organisation with 7.9 million volunteers is the UK's largest Charity -
We at Burton Joyce “Community” Neighbourhood Watch thank all those who supported  the  OPEN DAY
South Notts Police, incl Gedling Crime Reduction Manager,  Crime Stoppers, Mercury (Fire and Security), Roger Smith (Insurance), Brambles, B J Library, Methodist Church Hall, Tealights,  Delights /Deli & family, B J Fish and Chip Shop, Burrows & Close Chemists,  B J Post Office, B J Hospice Shop, Apple Tree Medical Centre, Carnarvon Rooms,  B  J  Co-op ,  Dennis Hair Salon, Honey Pot Nursery , Tree Dentist and  Nottingham Road Paper Shop    Â

2) Personal/Individual “Incident Reports” - for the Police or for passing to the Neighbourhood Watch “Pop-in”
3) A personal and confidential “Holiday Watch scheme”
4) Advise on and a supply of personal and home security devices available from the Neighbourhood Watch “Pop-in”
