Researching your own Family History

Genealogy research and establishing family roots requires perseverance, patience, super human “stick ability” - . You also need to be prepared to accept that the "facts" you discover or read may NOT be what you see at first, at a second or even the third look.

Official documentation cannot always be trusted, for in the early days many families could not write or read and needed the help of others, who were not always that proficient. All too often there are many variations of the spelling of names and places, so all to frequently it requires real detective work and ingenuity to get close to the truth. In the research of my own family name I am deeply indebted to the ingenuity and sheer application of my cousins - brother and sister - Joan and Peter .

Over many years and thousands of and miles spent travelilng around this area Joan and Peter visited an untold number of Parishes , their research waa all manually written down until the overal task could only really be unravelled by a computer  ( and a programmes written by Peter). It involved the correlation of all the known "facts" such as first names, family names , baptism dates , marriage dates , place names, mother's names, father's names, sisters and brothers names , death and age dates, places of burials  etc etc . As a result of this tremendouse piece of work they produced a comprehensive data base of families bearing our family name dedication which I truly believe deserves recognition. So I am including a small ,yet significant, section of their work covering related to Burton Joyce and our surrounding villages, which clearly illustrates the some of the movements and relationships of the families bearing our family name and their relationship with others in the area.

I hope that thiis database ( added below the TimeLine Chart)  will assist some genealogists amongst you to resolve and discover links and relationship which may assist your own research. As you will see from the chart below I have used the database and family reference numbers to create a visualisation of the period with the inter-realtionships of families and villages

*/

Extract from a larger computer generated file of Alvey vital records
grouped into families and linked across generations by multiple cycles of
computer matching followed by human selection from the various combinations.

Notes:
1 The family hierarchy suggested is only a best-fit estimate - there is no
claim that it represents reality. It is just one way of fitting the basic
data together.
2 Families are labelled for cross-referencng but the numbers have no other
significance.
3 Families are listed by components:
a) Summary line of husband & wife, known locations and year of first born.
b) Details of marriage(s) which are a good match to the family and are not a
good match to any other family.
c) List of children of the marriage(s), by baptism date and parish.
Surnames are ALVEY except where a variant is stated.
d) Details of the suggested link to the family of the preceding generation.
These links may relate to the mother of the family in the case of
illegitimate children (unknown father) or when the mother's maiden name
was also Alvey.
4 Information from other sources is appended when there is little ambiguity.
5 Recognizing multiple marriages is a black art, but failing to do so can have
an adverse effect on the computer tree-fitting process.
6 All known Burton Joyce families are include plus selected families from
other parishes where there is a suspected link to a Burton Joyce family

Putative ancestor families of Abel of Woodborough then Burton Joyce

================================================================================

6 All known Burton Joyce families are include plus selected families from
other parishes where there is a suspected link to a Burton Joyce family.

6 All known Burton Joyce families are include plus selected families from
other parishes where there is a suspected link to a Burton Joyce family.
