CHAPTER 6 : TimeLine Slice 1850 < 1900
Map of BJ showing a possible BJ village layout in the 1800/1900 period

STOCKINGERS/FWK/LACE
In 1851 at the Great Exhibition the demand brought in an age of prosperity with lower costs, increased output, and prices falling unemployment and improved working conditions. The principle articles being manufactured were cotton edging, linen laces, lace curtains, bedcovers, blinds, doyleys, and napery
The FWK and lace industries continued in the villages surrounding Nottingham. the Home workers mainly producing silk and cotton undergarments - long legged pants and vest etc., plus the women and children of the household also being involved in Lace Running ( Repairing small flaws and "snaggings" created by the machine manufacturing process and over embroidering)
Bagmen came into prominence during this period distributing and collecting the large quantity and variance of work put out by the Main Nottingham Manufacturers. Morleys work appeared to figure quite high in the Burton Joyce village (Abel Alvey and son John being their local Bagmen)
This sketch is modified but based on the original from

EDUCATION -
In 1851 there were 94 scholars ranging from 2 to 14 years there were 105 families with children of relevant school age 25 FWK families; 29 Agricultural workers families; 51 others occupation families Of these the children sent to school they were from the following 16 FWK families; 16 Agricultural workers families; 21 other workers families In 1861 there were 105 scholars of similar school ages from 59 families 27 FWK ; 23 Agricultural; 39 others
It appears as though the FWK families aspired for more education
In 1868 there was a new school (this is the present school building sited in the village centre on Main Street with the familiar striking clock). It had 68 children attending - 45 girls and In 1891 the school became free to everyone when fees were abolished, by 1900 the school had 140 children on the register The two Sunday Schools mentioned in 1818 and again in 1845 were The Wesleyan ( the present Beauty Salon) and the Church Sunday School
RELIGION
The top part of the Churches spire was removed in 1895 and a new one built. The ld top was reassembled and is still to be seen , on the ground in the south west angle of the tower and the south aisle. Steeples of this kind are known as broach spires and originated in the13th century
1889 - the Vicar of BJ communicating with the Commissioners of Queen Anne’s Bounty declared most of the inhabitants were FWK and labourers, with a few clerks and warehousemen in employ in Nottingham
ROAD SYSTEM
- 1750 Carriers from Nottingham to Southwell - Wednesday and Fridays ( possibly thro BJ?) 1 to Lincoln on Monday ( very probably NOT thro BJ)
TRANSPORT
-1871 Watermen were Thomas Tomlinson ( referred to as captain of a carrying boat - which means he probably was employed by the Trent River Co ), John Barnes and William Barnes May 1889 saw BJ Railway Station open for Goods traffic - 931 tons of goods were carried in the first year. More Goods traffic was carried from Lowdham in the same period ( 6,449tons). The reasoning being the much wider catchement area of Lowdham as BJ was more restricted being hemmed in between the river and the hill .The number of passengers does appears to be extra-ordinarily high
